What You Need to Know Before Surgery

Although hospitals have their own policies and guidelines to clear patients for surgery, most people over the age of 50 will be required to have blood work (CBC Panel) within 30 days of surgery, an EKG within 6 months of surgery and written surgical consent from their primary health care provider.

Post Operative Instructions Following Hand Surgery

To avoid complications follow these instructions carefully:

  1. Keep hand elevated above your heart, resting on a pillow at night and resting in a sling or other support during the day to avoid swelling and pain.
  2. Exercise your shoulder and elbow several times a day to avoid stiffness.
  3. Carefully observe exposed fingertips for any evidence of swelling or discoloration.
  4. Keep the dressing clean and dry.
  5. Do not remove the dressing unless instructed by us to do so.
  6. If the dressing is uncomfortable, has an odor, or is tight, call us.
  7. If you have a fever, call.
  8. If the prescribed pain medication is not adequate, call us.
  9. Take other medication as directed.
